Symbolic Rituals Yorkshire Family Celebrants

This is an ancient Celtic and Irish ritual in which the couple's hands are tied together by ribbons or cords. This symbolises the binding together of their two lives.

This is also an old Irish tradition. The rings are passed around all the guests who hold them for a few moments each to be "warmed up" and they can make a silent wish for the couple. It symbolises that all the guests support you and bless the couple's union.

These produce a strikingly visual and meaningful ritual to demonstrate the two lives blending into one. Each person pours a coloured sand into a special glass container to represent commitment and unity, or a blending of different cultures and beliefs. Family members can also be involved and sand ceremonies are a delightful way to involve children and the merging of two families into one new family.

This involves a couple lighting a candle each, then together, lighting a larger unity candle. This represents their journey together as a family or the making of a new family. Other family members can also become involved.

This is also an ancient Celtic & Irish tradition. The couple share the wine or spirit which can then be passed among family and friends to show their support for the blending of the couple's individual tastes, personalities and strengths.
